Kumaoni festival celebrating Green Earth to be held on July 16 in Dehradun | India News

NEW DELHI: A Kumaoni festival of Green Earth will be celebrated on July 16 by stranded Mizo-Meghlaya tribal students in Dehradun by planting about a thousand trees to help raise the water level in the region.
The famous Kumaoni festival ‘Harela’ is devoted to the greening the Earth.
The campaign for the Green Earth was launched on Monday by RSS head of environment movement Gopal Arya, BJP leader Tarun Vijay and Dehradun Cantonement board CEO Tanu Jain.
The tribal students under the guidance of former Rajya Sabha MP Tarun Vijay worked very hard during monsoon and with a span of 15 years the river beds have turned into a lush green belt of trees and shrubs.
This was achieved on the river beds of Tons in western Dehradun which were full of stones and sand few years back. The greening was done with the help from forest and horticulture departments for plants and bio fertilizers.
After a struggle of 15 years, the area has turned into a beautiful green small forest. Today, it has more than 1,500 tress of 27 species, and a green football ground.
The tribal students belonging to Meghalaya and Mizoram will help plant about a thousand trees with help from Sanjay Shrivastav, director horticulture and forest department and PCCF’s Jairaj.
