The total number of coronavirus cases in India has now risen to 1,38,536, including 76,820 active cases, 57,692 cured/discharged and 4,024 deaths. 11 areas with 70% of cases asked to scale up Covid fightThe 11 areas with high caseload are in seven states — Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, Delhi, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal and Rajasthan. In a review meeting with senior authorities of these areas, the health ministry asked them to be mindful of ramping up health infrastructure to ensure preparedness for the next two months and maintain high vigilance in old cities, urban slums and other high density pockets. The areas were briefed about the factors to be considered while mapping containment and buffer zones; activities mandated in containment zone, active search for cases through house-to-house surveillance, contact tracing, testing protocol, clinical management of active cases, etc, the ministry said.

As many as 148 deaths were reported by state governments during the day, the third highest so far. With this, the total number of Covid cases recorded in the country rose to 1,16,744. The total death toll stood at 3,583.
