NEW DELHI: Only 2.14 crore of migrant workers who returned to their home states picked up the 5 kg free foodgrain (wheat or rice) in May and June each, though the government had estimated nearly eight crore would take the benefit. This was due to less demand in several states while in Goa and Telangana, no foodgrain was distributed under this scheme as there was no demand. The Centre had announced 5kg free foodgrain to each migrant worker and those who do not have a ration card and 1kg chana per family per month for May and June under the Atmanirbhar Bharat scheme in its bid to ensure that everyone had access to food during the lockdown. NEW DELHI: Union home minister Amit Shah on Tuesday held a meeting of Group of ministers (GoM) at his North Block office here after Prime minister Narendra Modi extended the free ration scheme for 80 crore poor by five more months. Union ministers Nirmala Sitharaman, Narendra Singh Tomar, Ram Vilas Paswan and Piyush Goel attended the meeting, which was chaired by Shah. The meeting began around 5.30 pm and was still on at the time of filing of the report. NEW DELHI: Food minister Ram Vilas Paswan's office and part of his ministry located in Krishi Bhawan building in Central Delhi has been sealed, after an official in the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying was tested positive for Covid-19. "Due to one recent corona positive case found in the Department of Animal Husbandry and Dairying, it has been decided that the Department of Food and Public Distribution office at Krishi Bhawan shall remain closed on May 19 and May 20 for intensive sanitization," an official order said. There are two departments under Paswan's ministry - Department of Food and Public Distribution and Department of Consumer Affairs. Krishi Bhawan, located at the Rajpath Area in New Delhi, also houses several other ministries
